A Short Tribute
חכם פריגא (ישועה) זוארץ נולד לאמו ולאביו ביום ב' טבת תרס"ח (1907) בטריפולי שבלוב.
עוד בתחילת דרכו ב-'צלא' (תלמוד תורה של יהודי לוב) נתגלה כתלמיד מוכשר בעל זיכרון פנומנלי. בגיל 17 העבירו אביו לבית-ספר של חברת 'יגדל תורה' ושם למד אצל חכם כמוס נחאיסי.
בשנת תרפ"ט (1928) והוא בן 21, נשלח חכם פריגא זוארץ מטעם הרבנות בטריפולי לשמש כרבה של העיר חומס. בנוסף שימש כחזן, שוחט, פוסק הלכה ומורה לעברית. עוד היותו בחומס וגם לאחר חזרתו לטריפולי, חיבר שירי געגועים לארץ ישראל ואהבת ציון, אותה דאג להשריש בלב תלמידיו לצד העברית. חכם פריגא זוארץ סייע לסוכנות בהעלאת יהודים ארצה. בשל קשריו ההדוקים עם יושבי ארץ ישראל, שהשלטון האיטלקי שבלוב סימן כארץ אויב בשל המנדט הבריטי, הואשם חכם פריגא זוארץ בשנת תש"א (1940) בריגול ונשלח לשתי שנות מאסר במדבר הלובי.
חכם פריגא זוארץ זכה ועלה לארץ בשנת תש"ט (1949), והועבר עם אחיו למעברת שבות עם (בית ליד), שם שימש כמחנך ומאוחר יותר כמנהל ביה"ס. שמו יצא לפניו ככתובת נאמנה לשאלות הלכתיות בארץ ובגולה. הוא חיבר ספרים רבים, ביניהם 'יהדות לוב', 'אנשי אמונה', 'שאו זמרה' ועוד. רוב עבודתו הספרותית עסקה בחיי בני העדה הלובית, מנהגיהם ומורשתם.
חכם פריגא זוארץ היה פעיל בתנועת 'הפועל המזרחי' ויסד עם חברים נוספים את 'ועד קהילות יוצאי לוב', שהפך לאחד מהגופים במוסדות המפד"ל. בשנת תשט"ו (1955) נבחר לחבר בכנסת השלישית מטעם סיעת חזית דתית לאומית.
בגיל 83 הוענק לו תואר 'יקיר התנועה הדתית לאומית'. במקביל, זכה להקים ישיבה ע"ש חכם אברהם חיים אדאדי שהיה מגדולי חכמי לוב, ששימשה כישיבת המשך ל'ישיבת אדאדי' שבטריפולי.
חכם פריגא זוארץ נפטר ביום ט' אייר תשנ"ג (1993). לאחר מותו הוקם תלמוד תורה על שמו בשיכון ותיקים בנתניה הנושא את שמו, 'אדני פ"ז' ואף נקרא על שמו רחוב בשיכון ותיקים בנתניה.
A few quotes from the Rabbi on 'Customs of Israel' in which he recounts the custom of the righteous Jewish women of Libya who would collect money for the Rachel Imeinu Fund every New Moon
There were a few women in Tripoli, the capital, and from the nearby provincial towns who maintained the Rachel Imeinu Fund, the proceeds of which were designated for the renowned Sephardi yeshivot of Jerusalem. It was principally women who donated to this fund…Some of the women who had these charity boxes would go from house to house on the eve of every New Moon to collect donations for Rachel Imeinu and were, of course, graciously received; each woman donated in keeping with her ability.
The privilege of being a Rachel Imeinu member was justly considered a great privilege that was not under any conditions to be relinquished, by neither the aged nor the infirm, and neither the winter rains nor the harsh summer weather could prevent these fundraisers from going out. And so we would see aged women bent with age, who walked with great difficulty, making a supreme effort and going out every eve of the New Moon to fulfill this good deed that required hours of tiring walking from house to house…
The blessings given to the donors by the fundraisers to the effect that the righteousness of Rachel Imeinu protect and preserve them and their entire families were often exceeded by those given to the fundraising women by the donors - for having accorded them the privilege of fulfilling their pledges and being party to supporting Torah scholars in the Holy Land …
