חכם חיים מאימראן נולד לאמו ולאביו חכם משה בשנת תקכ"ו (1766) במקנס שבמרוקו.
אמו של חכם חיים היתה נכדתו של חכם יעקב טולידאנו, המהרי"ט. אביו, חכם משה, היה רב מפורסם במקנס.
חכם חיים מאימראן נפטר ביום ה' תשרי תקמ"ו (1785), והוא כבן עשרים.
חיבורו 'חפץ חיים', על פירושי רש"י ורא"ם לתורה מכונה 'פרי עץ חיים' בהעתקות אחרות של כתב היד. החיבור יצא לאור במקנס בשנת תש"ב (1942). שאר כתביו, הכוללים בעיקר חידושים על הש"ס, נמצאים בכתב יד.
The LORD said to Abram, "Go forth from your native land and from your father's house to the land that I will show you". Why didn't He reveal the land immediately and said (only) "…I will show you" to Abram? So that the Land of Israel would be revered in his eyes, for by things remaining hidden, his heart would yearn and desire to know about the Land, and so that the commandment would be endeared to him.
