חכם דוד הלוי קאראסו (הזקן) נולד לאמו ולאביו יהודה בעיר סלוניקי.
שימש אב בית דין בעיר סלוניקי. נולדו לו שני בנים חכם יהודה וחכם שמואל. נכדו נקרא גם חכם דוד הלוי (הצעיר), והוא פעל בתקופת חכם רפאל אשר קובו, אשר נתמנה כרבה של סלוניקי בשנת תר"ט (1849), ושימש בבית הדין יחד עם חכם חיים שמואל גאטיניו וחכם יעקב מנשה.
חכם דוד הלוי קאראסו (הזקן) נפטר ביום ח' כסלו שנת תקנ"ב (1792).
ספרו 'ידי דוד' - שו"ת על ארבע טורים, יצא לאור בסלוניקי בשנת תרכ"ז (1867) בהשתדלות חכם יצחק בן יהודה קאראסו, וכרוכות בו תשובות הסבא והנכד.

There is always something to learn, even from the widespread customs of non-Jews.
